Bamford, Derbyshire

24th September 2013

Bamford is a very picturesque village in the Derwent Valley, Derbyshire.  There has been a mill in this location since the eighteenth century, but the most recent one, a very handsome stone building ceased cotton production in 1965 and has been converted into luxury apartments.

The opening of the Manchester to Sheffield railway line in 1894 was a huge boon to Bamford which now had a station on the line, whereas it had previously relied upon the stagecoach.   Although eminent nineteenth century writers such as Jane Austen, Wordsworth and Byron had visited Derbyshire (arising out of the Romantic Movement’s fascination with Nature), now tourists could visit the area in much greater numbers.
