Bamford Mill and the Moore family
21st November 2013
The first expansion at Bamford, Derbyshire, took place when William Cameron Moore acquired Bamford’s cotton mill in the late eighteenth century. The Moore family developed Bamford during the nineteenth century but the village was rather isolated until the arrival of the railway.
Conditions at Bamford mill were unusual for the time because William Cameron Moore was a relatively benevolent employer. The workforce had access to good housing and the Moores provided medical care for the workers and funded a school for the children. The Moore family also endowed a Gothic Revival church and rectory for the village.
