The Grand Theatre, Leeds

13th June 2013

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited Leeds and Prince Albert remarked that  Leeds needed a “Grand theatre” for the upper classes to be entertained.  As a result, local businessmen grouped  together  and raised the £62,000 needed to build such a theatre.

The Grand Theatre was opened, 1 year 1 month later, in November 1878

The stairs leading up to the dress circle are extra wide to accommodate the 2 metre wide dresses which were fashionable at the time, unfortunately the doors are  just standard width!
