The Penfold Pillarbox in Buxton

4th June 2013

JW Penfold (1828-1909) was an architect and surveyor who designed many important buildings, including many prestige architectural projects, but he is most famous for his iconic design for this style of hexagonal pillar box.

These hexagonal boxes, known as “the Penfold” are now quite rare as they were only in production for 13 years between 1866 and 1879 but several of the innovations that Penfold  introduced, such as different sizes and the use of the standard red colour, are still used today.

There are a few replica hexagonal postboxes around but this is one of only approximately 150 original Penfolds that remain.  Like many of the original Penfolds, this letterbox is a listed monument.
