Needlebed, Henley On Thames

23rd March 2015

I  recently scrolled through my photographs and found these from a journey last August, which I thought you may like to see. I drove through Needlebed and saw the wonderful Old Kiln, which I had to just stop and find out more about.

There had been tiles and bricks made in Needlebed since the Middle Ages. The raw materials needed for making the tiles and bricks were sourced locally in Chilterns and the local woodland was used for fuel for the kilns.

In the account records for 1365  35,000 tiles were made for Wallingford Castle. In 1422/3 tiles were made for roofing a hall and chamber at Abingdon Abbey.
