Edward Lear

Edward Lear (1812-1888) met William Holman Hunt in 1852, before Holman Hunt knew William Morris.  Holman Hunt was Lear’s tutor for several months and Lear believed that he had gained a great deal from Hunt’s tuition.    Lear became an avid disciple of Holman Hunt and the PreRaphaelite Brotherhood for a time.

Through Hunt, Lear met JE Millais and Thomas Woolner .  Whereas previously Lear had painted many beautiful watercolours, for a time he changed to oil painting and tried to paint in the PreRaphaelite manner.  Later, Lear reverted back to mostly watercolours.   Today he is probably best known for his humourous poems and sketches.Edward Lear
