Félix Edouard Vallotton (1865 –1925) was born in Switzerland and is important in the history of printmaking.  Vallotton was classically trained in Paris as a painter, but was strongly influenced by William Morris and the Arts & Crafts movement and, as a result, decided to experiment with other types of art previously considered “artisan” rather than “Art”, such as printing using woodcuts.

Vallotton was also influenced by  his knowledge of Japanese woodcuts which became more well-known in Europe towards the end of the nineteenth century.  Vallotton, in turn,  influenced other well-known artists such as Edvard Munch and Aubrey Beardsley.
