Richard “Dickie” Doyle (1824-83) was a prolific and highly successful Victorian illustrator.  Doyle famously illustrated many children books.  Doyle illustrated The King of the Golden River (published 1851),  by William Morris’ close friend and inspiration John Ruskin.    Ruskin wrote the story in 1841 for Effie Gray, whom he later married.

This illustration is from In Fairyland, a Series of Pictures From the Elf World, with a poem by W Allingham, 1870.   The book is considered to be one of his greatest works, due to the inventiveness of the illustrations.
