William Burges (1827-1881)

25th May 2013

William Burges was an English architect who sought to revive the art and architecture of medieval England.  Like William Morris, who came after him, Burges’ work can be seen as a reaction to nineteenth century industrialisation and, like William Morris, Burges’ work was imbued with utopian social values.  Burges’ made  an extremely important contribution to the Gothic Revival  movement and his work is becoming increasingly more appreciated in recent decades.
