In the lovely North Yorkshire village of Spofforth, stands Spofforth Castle, where a ruined hall and chamber of a fortified manor house still remains. It was once owned by the Percy family and dates from the 14th to 15th centuries. The castle was ransacked and left in ruins during the Civil War. JMW Turner visited the castle and sketched it in 1797 and again in 1815-16. The sketches are in the Tate Gallery.
