The Grand Theatre opened in 1878. Wilson Barratt (1846–1904) was the first general manager. Barratt was not only the general manager, he also produced, directed and acted in the theatre. Barratt performed all of these functions for seventeen years, from when the theatre first opened.
Barratt was not only the general manager, producer, director and actor. As patrons of the dress circle arrived and entered through the front doors, Wilson Barratt would personally greet them through the open window of his office between the stairs.
