The peacock was an popular image of beauty and pride, which appears in many paintings by the PreRaphaelites, such as those by John Millais, Edward Burne Jones and Gabriel Dante Rossetti. The PreRaphaelites drew upon ideas from classical mythology, and from Christian belief: (the “eyes” on the peacock feathers represented omniscience, and the peacock ability to slay and eat poisonous snakes represented nobility and glory), The shedding and replacement of feathers represented immortality, renewal and rebirth.
