When the Christmas lights come down and the tinsel is packed back up in the loft, the house without the festive decorations can feel a little deflating. We miss the tree we’ve gotten used to being in the corner and the sparkles all around. But each year, instead of dwelling on the fun we had in December, we go into the New Year wanting to spruce up the house a little and inject some new colours and designs to brighten up the rooms and give them new life now the decorations have come down.
We’ll talk you through some incredibly easy things we’re going to do…
Since it’s still winter and we live with the curtains closed quite a lot of the time when we get home from work, it’s important we love the pattern that’s on our curtains or blinds. Since we tend to like deeper and darker colours during the winter and lighter brighter ones during the summer, we have a few pairs to rotate that we made ourselves and some that we keep on the windows year round.
Two patterns we love in curtains right now (though admittedly it’s hard to choose as they all work well!) are Trellis and Compton.
2. The tablecloth
When we think about the time we spend in the home as a family or when we have friends over, much of that time is spent around the table talking and laughing. So let’s make it even lovelier with a brand new tablecloth in a pretty design! We have so many William Morris licensed designs and some original French Floral designs from our French archive from the late 1800s – early 1900s. Many of these are available in a standard cotton and in a pvc fabric so you can wipe it clean after any foodie spills!
3. The cushions
We sell our fabric by the half metre, so they’re perfect for all your crafts – one thing we love to do is recover some old cushions which gives the settee a new lease of life – nothings worse than well worn cushions! You can also recover old dining room chairs and lampshades. Many of our lovely customers have done this with our fabric and they’re so lovely. We once bought an antique dining room set and the chairs were ever so slightly tattered, so we recovered them with Willow Bough Blue and they looked so lovely – upcycling is the best!

4. The Kitchen
The kitchen is one of our favourite rooms in the house, and one that’s so easy to customise throughout the year and change out different aspects. Something so simple as changing the tea towel and apron that are hung on the oven really change the look of the room. We love hanging the oven gloves over the oven rail so they’re always handy, a bright and beautiful pattern makes an ordinary household necessity so much better!

We’re often asked what the different weights of our fabrics are and what projects they’d be good for. These are our three different types of fabrics in our Brother Rabbit red colourway - cotton on the right, heavyweight in the middle and pvc on the left ✨ As you can see on the second photo, and as the name suggests, our heavyweight fabric has a thicker, heavier weave which makes it good for projects such as curtains and light upholstery 🪡 Our cotton fabric is perfect for quilting and projects such as dress making but honestly the amount of crafts that can be made out of them both are endless! 🫶🏻 Our pvc fabric is great to put straight on the table as it won’t fray so doesn’t need a hem and is easy to maintain as it’s wipe clean! Perhaps the most famous Morris design, Strawberry Thief was registered in 1883, inspired by Morris watching the thrushes stealing strawberries from under his fruit nets at the beautiful @kelmscottmanor 🍓 It was printed using the indigo dye technique, which was labour intensive and first attempted in 1875 but not perfected for 8 years 🎨 We also print Strawberry Thief in a beautiful red 🫶🏻

We print Willow Bough in this beautiful blue and also in green 🌿 First designed in 1887, it was first produced as a wallpaper design which May Morris, Williams daughter, used to decorate her bedroom before being adapted for fabric in 1895 when it was block printed in Merton Abbey 🌿
