One of our most common questions is what weight of William Morris fabric is it best to use for your project? The answer is actually more preference and what project you’re doing. But, we wanted to show you more fabric detail in the hope you can see the fabric weight.
We say it depends on the project because sometimes, it doesn’t matter what you make it out of, as long as it’s how you like it. For a curtain for example, we’ve actually used both heavy weight and cotton. The heavy weight is great for a bigger window and is slightly thicker and so we’ve used cotton on a smaller window or one we don’t mind slightly more light shining through.

You can see here with our Brother Rabbit Red fabric that the weave is heavier. It’s slightly more durable than cotton because of the heavier weave, it’s still 100% cotton. It’s great for upholstery too, though obviously like all fabric, will suffer wear and tear over time.
Heavy weight is also good for clothing such as dungarees, cushions, seat pads and so on. We’ve seen some lovely projects with heavy weight, even things like sun loungers!
Our Strawberry Thief blue fabric as seen here in 100% cotton drill is clearly drill because of the lines running along the weave. It’s a strong fabric and is often actually overlooked as an option for heavy weight. But it’s what we produce our cotton drill aprons in as it’s durable and washes really well which is obviously really important for an apron. For this reason (of course, follow washing instructions on the garment please!) that the drill fabric is great for clothing and other upholstery projects.
Our 100% cotton fabric is a really popular option right now for all manner of projects. From dress making to hats to book covers! The projects you create are diverse and wonderful to see so please tag us in them if you do share them! Cotton fabric doesn’t need too much of an introduction. But, it’s what we use for our tablecloths, napkins, placemats and seat pads.
We also have pvc fabric which is wipe clean 100% cotton cloth.
All our fabric is sold by the half metre and you can see the full range here. We print all our fabric in the North of England. We’re really proud to do so to support British industry and the traditional textile industry here. All our William Morris designs are licensed and are printed both size and colour wise to our own specifications.

🌿 William Morris Day 20 🌿 William Morris fact of the day; did you know he founded the Kelmscott Press? 🖋️ He wrote of the venture – “Here is a new craft to conquer and to perfect.” Printing began at the press in Spring 1891 🪴 He designed multiple fonts including “Golden” Roman typeface and “Troy” Gothic type along with “Chaucer” and he worked to create beautiful books in regards to their designs which took into account their type, image and decorative elements – you can see beautiful examples of what he achieved today if you do a quick search on the Kelmscott Press- it’s well worth a Google! 🌷

🍓 William Morris Month Day 14 🍓 Strawberry Thief was inspired by William Morris’s watching the thrushes under the strawberry nets at the stunning @kelmscottmanor 🌿 May Morris conjured up this scene when speaking of the design, “You can imagine my Father going out in the early morning and watching the rascally thrushes at work on the fruit beds and telling the fanned who growls ‘I’d like to wring their necks!’ that no bird in the garden must be touched. There were certainly more birds than strawberries in spite of attempts at protection. And the walls of the little dining-room are hung with this note of the June garden and the little lords of it.” 🍓 What a lovely insight into the Morris family life! 🥰
