William Morris Fabric Crafts Valentine’s Hearts

Did you see our little Valentines William Morris hearts craft on our social media? A seriously easy but effective craft, we thought we’d write a little how-to on our latest William Morris fabric crafts. They’re really great to customise for each holiday too – from Valentines hearts to Easter bunnies to Christmas trees, you can decorate with beautiful Morris prints year round.

We hung our hearts on a little Valentines tree, but you could also use them on a stick in a flower arrangement, or hung in the window with some string. There’s endless ways to utilise them, for Christmas, we put the Christmas trees together in a garland and hung from the mantle.

For this, you’ll just need:

A bit of cardboard for a pattern – you can use an old cereal box for this if we’re getting all Blue Peter!
Some beautiful Morris fabric in your chosen designs – this is a great project for using scraps from other projects too
Stuffing for the inside – if you don’t have any, you can reuse from from an old pillow, or use old scraps of fabric
Fabric scissors + needle and thread
Something to use for hanging – ribbon or twine works great
If you’re going to make them into scented bags, you’ll need your scented beads

To make:

Start by folding your cardboard in half and draw half a heart from the centre fold. For reference, ours are all 10cm from the centre of the heart to the point and 13.5cm from edge to edge. You could always make different sized ones to add some variety to the decor.
Next, place the open heart template onto two pieces of your William Morris fabric and draw around your template.
Fold the fabric face to face (pattern to pattern) and use your sewing machine (or hand stitch) from the base point to a point around 6cm from where you started. Make sure you leave this big enough hold so that you can turn the fabric the right way round so it’s not too fiddly and you can stuff the centre with your filling.
We used some pillow stuffing from an unused pillow, but you could also use these as beautiful little draw sachets, fill them with your favourite scents to put in your draw or hang over your favourite hangers.
Once lightly stuffed with your filling, fold in the draw edge and use a slip stitch to close the heart.
Next, thread a darning needle with string. push the needle through the top dip and tie the string with a knot at the top. Leave a 13cm hanging loop. Cut a 20cm piece of string and pull to a knot over the top of the hanging loop and tie in a bow. Neaten the ends of the bow.
Now you’re done! How easy was that, and so effective as decor. What do you use yours for?

So easy to make, you don’t have to just make them in hearts – try Christmas trees, bunnies for Easter, a star shape and so on, the Skys the limit!

We always love effective crafts that are really easy to make, you could scale these up and make them into sofa cushions too, it’s the same principle but you’ll need a bigger template – it’s always fun how different crafts all lead onto each other! We’re often asked what the different weights of our fabrics are and what projects they’d be good for. These are our three different types of fabrics in our Brother Rabbit red colourway - cotton on the right, heavyweight in the middle and pvc on the left ✨ As you can see on the second photo, and as the name suggests, our heavyweight fabric has a thicker, heavier weave which makes it good for projects such as curtains and light upholstery 🪡 Our cotton fabric is perfect for quilting and projects such as dress making but honestly the amount of crafts that can be made out of them both are endless! 🫶🏻 Our pvc fabric is great to put straight on the table as it won’t fray so doesn’t need a hem and is easy to maintain as it’s wipe clean! All our fabrics are sold by the half metre and if you’d like a sample of any of our fabrics in any weight just let us know and we’ll get a free sample sent to you! 💌

Perhaps the most famous Morris design, Strawberry Thief was registered in 1883, inspired by Morris watching the thrushes stealing strawberries from under his fruit nets at the beautiful @kelmscottmanor 🍓 It was printed using the indigo dye technique, which was labour intensive and first attempted in 1875 but not perfected for 8 years 🎨 We also print Strawberry Thief in a beautiful red 🫶🏻
