Foucault’s Pendulum at the Devonshire Dome
The Devonshire Royal Hospital, Buxton, (which was converted from John Carr of York’s glorious Georgian-era stable building during the nineteenth century), remained a hospital throughout the twentieth century. In the year 2000, the NHS transferred ownership of the building to Derby University. The building is now part of the University’s Buxton Campus and known as the Devonshire Dome.
It took five years (and many millions of pounds) to restore the building. The renovated Dome was re-opened by the Prince of Wales in 2006. Inside the splendid interior, an example of Foucault’s Pendulum is suspended, (which demonstrates the rotation of the Earth).
