James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was born in Massachusetts, USA and studied in St Petersburg, Russia, Washington DC and Paris before moving to London in the early 1860s. In France Whistler was close to Edouard Manet and Gustave Courbet .
In London Whistler was a near neighbour of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and became associated with Algernon Swinburne, Albert Moore and Walter Sickert. Whistler was a highly influential painter and designer who courted controversy and sought to challenge certain aspects of William Morris’s philosophy, whilst agreeing with other aspects.
