Let’s Craft: William Morris Halloween Edition!

30th September 2020

We know it’s still a month to go until Halloween but who doesn’t love a Halloween craft! We wanted to give you the craft idea in time for you to get the materials and find time to craft! We’re not for a spooky Halloween particularly, however, we are a fan of fun crafts and also of delicious treats such as the ghosts from Betty’s featured on our pictures.

Our cute little pumpkin we crafted using our William Morris Compton 100% cotton fabric. Now, we could have chosen quite a few different fabrics, we think in particular Brother Rabbit Red, Eyebright and Strawberry Thief would also look fabulous. But Compton is so great in the Autumn in particular that we went for that design. Take a look through our entire collection to see the fabrics you could pick from!

So, it’s a simple craft, but here’s how we made it. (We did make this a few years ago, but since it’s fabric and cardboard, it can be brought out each year in a sustainable craft!)

You will need:

  • a cardboard pumpkin (ours was from Hobbycraft)
  • PVA glue and brush
  • Fabric – we chose our William Morris Compton bias binding. We used 7m of bias for this project. We used bias as it’s easy to work with with a shape like the pumpkin, but a piece of fabric would work equally as well, just with slightly more prep time. We’d say 1/2 m will be enough for this project.
  • Battery powered tea light

How to make your own pumpkin

It’s quite simple this one – all you need to do is paint some PVA onto the pumpkin and then stick on the bias. We cut the bias into little 1 inch squares and then stick them on. Cutting them up gives a little more flexibility with working with the fabric.

We liked to layer the bias over each other so that there’s no gaps and a little texture.

And that’s it – it’s that simple! Wait for it to dry and pop in your battery operated tea lights and you’re good to go!

You don’t have to do this with a pumpkin – you could get yourself a cardboard outline of a ghost, witch, monster and more. Then just do the same process.

If you make this Halloween craft – let us know. You can always tag us on social media or why not send us an email! If you send us photos of crafts using our fabric, we’ll send you a 20% discount code off our website for your next order. We might feature your images and project on our blog and socials!

Send your emails to – [email protected] – we can’t wait for your email!
