10th May 2013
Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penzance is showing an interesting exhibition until the 8th of June 2013. The exhibition is called Summer in February and the title refers to a book by Jonathan Smith. The exhibition has been timed to coincide with the release of a feature film which is based on the book and is due to be released in June.
The film and exhibition focus on the Newlyn School colony of artists who lived and worked around the Lamorna Valley, West Cornwall, in the years leading up to the First World War. The group centred around Stanhope Forbes, (1857-1947), Harold Knight (1874-1961), Laura Knight (1877-1970) and Alfred Munnings (1878-1959). Forbes, himself, was a student of PreRaphaelite painters JE Millais and Sir Frederic Leighton).
The gallery has a permanent collection of paintings from the Newlyn School.
