Trellis was designed in 1864 by William Morris, inspired by the rose trellis in the garden of Red House - his home in Bexleyheath. Trellis was the first wallpaper Morris designed, along with Daisy and Fruit; since they were all produced using a hand-printing process, it took a long time to do and therefore was expensive.
Read MoreEach colour within the design required a separate block - so these three designs, with 12 blocks each required to create the intricate patterns, were put on hold until the early 1870s when Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. had enough money to finance the designs.
The birds within the design, as with other patterns with naturistic elements, were designed by his good friend Philip Webb.
