William Morris signed a contract for Philip Webb to build Red House in April 1859.
Morris had visited several areas prior to choosing the orchard and meadow near Upton. The ordnance survey map of 1868 shows Upton to be fairly isolated in the middle of farmland and orchards. Nowadays when you visit Red House it is hard to imagine but once you step though the gate into the beautiful garden you can experience how excited William and Jane Morris must have felt to build such a lovely house and wonderful garden.
