I walked from the corridor into the Arab room at Cardiff Castle and was just amazed.
The ceiling is known as a muquarnas ceiling. Made from wood then covered with pure gold leaf and decorated.
It is an amazing sight and with the stained glass windows below it is just beautiful, the windows were inspired by Egyption designs and each have a crystal ball in front to reflect the light onto the ceiling.
The Arab room was commissioned in 1881, it was one of the last designs William Burges produced before he died.
The window shutters are designed in the mishrabaya style so that you can see out but those outside cannot see in, which was excellent as although the room was designed to be used as an occasional sitting room it was also used as a bedroom when needed. It must have been amazing to wake up in this room!
