In a corner, almost overshadowed by the amazing treasures of this exhibition, are three pencil, on laid paper, sketches. The sketches date from around 1860 and are Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s studies for his magnificent painting, the Seed of David.
The first two sketches are for the representation of David as a young man. The third sketch is for David as a mature man, as King. This is executed in ink wash and pencil on grey paper with sgraffito.. The chain mail is exquisitely detailed, as is the crown. The model Rossetti used for this sketch was William Morris.
I left the museum and drove to Llandaff Cathedral to see the Seed of David in all its glory, it is just wonderful as you can see from the photograph below.
