Cragside in Northumberland is well known for the beautiful Arts & Crafts styling on the house but I did not expect it to be in such beautiful grounds.
The view down from the house to the Iron bridge is stunning, we walked down through the rock garden which had been developed in the 1870’s.
It was Lady Armstrong who is credited with developing the gardens at Cragside, she was known to be a keen and knowledgeable gardener.
The bridge was built around 1869 and restored in 2008 – 9. The three arches are supported on two stone piers. I must admit to being a little scared walking over it but the view is just fabulous.
It is hard from the ground to appreciate just how tall some of the trees are at Cragside.I love the tale that Lady Armstrong would pay a penny a bucket for local people to carry a bucket of rich valley soil from the Croquet Valley up to Cragside to help the new plants!
This beautiful house and grounds are a must see, the tea room is also well worth a visit!
