Joseph Mallord William Turner, (1775–1851) was born in London into a relatively humble family background. Turner showed a prodigious talent as a young boy and entered the Royal Academy of Art school in 1789, at the age of 14. He was admitted to the Royal Academy the following year.
Turner was greatly admired by William Morris and the PreRaphaelites. When Edward Burne Jones became engaged to Georgiana MacDonald, William Morris gave Georgiana a book of engravings of Turner’s drawings as an engagement present.
