Cragside was the first home to be lit by electricity.
Water power was first used to provide electricity in 1878 it was the first hydro – electricity.
Sir Joseph Swan was a friend of Lord Armstrong and it was his new filament light bulbs which were used at Cragside. I can only imagine the reaction of guests who came to see the wonderful new electric lighting and other technical inventions used in the house.
The kitchen at Cragside is a lovely warm and light room.
For the staff who worked in it the additions of Lord Armstrong’s inventions must have been wonderful. Within the kitchen is an automatic turnspit for the meat to cook.
