Hello! Welcome back to our blog – this week, we’re chatting about our favourite William Morris quotes. He was actually best known during his lifetime as a poet, so he was obviously a talented wordsmith. The way he uses words to connect to an audience after all this time is quite remarkable; he remains relevant not only in design but in his words.
One of our favourites also relates to our environmental policy (which you can read here) that seems to be a lesser known quote than some of his others. “There is no square mile of earth’s inhabitable surface that is not beautiful in it’s own way, if we men will only abstain from wilfully destroying that beauty.” – William Morris. We think this is a beautiful way to put it – the fact that it was on his mind at the time of Victorian industrialisation shows he was far beyond his time in more than one way.
This quote is perhaps his best known; “Have nothing in your houses that you don’t know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” This has inspired hundreds of years of interior designers and fixer uppers alike.
We love this; it was actually chosen by H&M to put on their t-shirts for their H&M X William Morris range. It’s a lovely quote and actually part of a longer poem of the same title, which you should defiantly take a minute to go read if you can.
We couldn’t agree more – isn’t this such a lovely way to think about life? Even the smallest details create the actual happiness within life. It’s clear Morris observed this because lots of his designs have a naturalistic element. These are inspired by the English countryside which he loved.
We think he achieved this! Not only the things he designed and created but those artists and designers he’s continued to inspire in the years since his designs.
What’s your favourite William Morris quotes? We would love to know – let us know on social media!
